Start by defining the wastewater
Wastewater pumps are not selected solely by flow and head. Solids size, fibrous content, sand and abrasive particles directly affect impeller suitability. Two models delivering the same flow can be suitable for different waste streams.
Vortex and channel impellers
In vortex designs, the induced vortex contributes to liquid transport; assess free passage and efficiency together. Channel impellers depend on the geometry of their flow passages. For either design, use the manufacturer’s specified free passage and application limits.
When is a grinder considered?
Grinder designs address maceration and pressurised discharge in specific wastewater systems. They are not a universal solution for metal, stones or hard waste. Review waste composition, pipe diameter and operating strategy alongside the pump family’s instructions.
A system beyond the pump
Sump shape, stagnant areas, start-stop levels and pipework also affect blockage risk. The appropriate impeller cannot correct a poorly designed sump by itself. Assess the lift station together with level control, maintenance access and operating records.
