What determines energy consumption?

Pump-system energy consumption depends jointly on flow, required pressure, hydraulic efficiency, motor efficiency and operating hours. An efficient motor matters, but cannot on its own compensate for the wrong duty point or excessive system losses.

Record the real operating profile

Determine whether the system runs at the same flow throughout the day. Pressure and flow measurements, valve positions and running hours can reveal opportunities. A savings percentage is not meaningful without understanding the difference between design conditions and actual use.

Select controls for the application

Variable speed, capacity staging and fixed-speed operation can each make sense under different conditions. Consider static head, minimum flow and the pump’s permitted operating range. Control selection requires assessing the pump and installation together.

From purchase price to life-cycle cost

Include energy, maintenance, spare parts, downtime and service access in the assessment. A lower initial price does not always mean a lower total cost. Compare alternatives under the same operating profile and service conditions.
